Egbert Jan Louwerse is professor of Flute at the Prince Claus Conservatoire Groningen, the Netherlands.


Egbert Jan studied Flute with Pieter Odé at the Sweelinck Conservatory and with Marieke Schneemann at the Conservatory of Amsterdam with whom he graduated at the highest possible level, specializing in Modern Music.


Besides fluteplaying he did courses in conducting, music with "Live-electronics" and composition. For three years he studied the complex rhythms and microtonalitiy of Carnatic Music, the classical music of South India.


After his studies he travelled many times to France to study there with great Masters including flutist Christian Lardé, harpist and Debussy-expert Marie-Claire Jamet and composer Jean-Michel Damase.


Although he works for several professional Dutch Orchestra's, Egbert Jan’s main interest is chamber music. He is one of the flutists of the Dutch Flutequartett with whom he was a prizewinner at the famous Kuhlau-Flutecompetition in Germany in 2001. He is one of the 8 flutists of Fluteoctet Blow Up! and is flutist of the international Occult Ensemble that specializes in contemporary music. He also plays with renowned musicians like harpist Manja Smits and pianist Henry Kelder. He is flutist of woodwindquintet het Gelders Blaaskwintet.


In recentyears Egbert Jan has given special attention to French Repertoire.  In this important music for the flute he discovered / realized several elements in notationforms, connecting these in his playing, his teaching and writing about this music. He is regularly invited to talk and teach about this, such as recently at the Adams International Flute Festival, the Conservatorio Superior de Musica Oviedo in Spain, Conservatorio Umberto Giordano Foggia (Italy), het Koninklijk Conservatorium Antwerpen (Belgium),  Shenzhen school of music (China), Xinghai Conservatory of Music (China) en L’Instituto Superiore Conservatorio G. Cantelli di Novarra (Italy), Conservatorio G.B. Martini di Bologna (Italy), Academy of Music Katowice (Poland)



Egbert Jan played with renowned orchestras like Het Orkest van het Oosten, de Marinierskapel, The Barton Workshop, De Volharding, the Amsterdam Wind Orchestra  and Sinfonia Rotterdam.

He is a regular guest as a jury member at (International) competitions and at international festivals for concerts and masterclasses, like the Orlando Festival, Adams International Flutefestival 2016 and 2019, City Proms Leeuwarden, the Nargen Festival Estonia, Peter the Great Festival, Festival Fiatti 2019 Novara.

With harpist Vera Kool he recieved the honorable invitations to the worldfamous Académie Musicale de Villecroze in 2008.


On June 13th 2015 he was awarded by the French Société Académique "Arts-Sciences-Lettres" in Paris the "Diplome de Medaille d'Argent" (the Silver Medal) for his work on French Music throughout his career.

Because of this remarkable decoration, the

Hanze University Groningen enlisted him on

the 26th of May 2016 in its “Walk of Fame”.










In June 2017 Egbert Jan recieved another Masters Degree from the Conservatory of Amsterdam on his thesis “Phrasing slurs in French Chambermusic for flute and piano from 1871”, an effort in understanding the multi-implication of long phrasing slurs on performance practice in French chamber music for flute from 1871, focusing on the influence of Paul Taffanel.

Out of this research he made a CD with music from and around Taffanel, together with pianist Henry Kelder. Available from 2018.


As a composer, some of his works have been published by Donemus and Edition MatchingArts (EMA).


He plays a 14k golden Pearl Maesta, a 14 k golden Haynes

and a 2-piece wooden Braun.
